Special cells in the pancreas produce a hormone called insulin to regulate metabolism. When this hormone is not present glucose cannot enter body cells and blood glucose levels rise. Hyperglycemia may result from this situation. This process is the development of diabetes mellitus. Type 1 diabetes, formerly called juvenile diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, has two forms; immune-mediated and idiopathic. Type 1 diabetes accounts for 5-10% of cases in the United States. Research has shown that there is an inherited tendency for developing the disease; it may be triggered by environmental factors (Rosdahl & Kowalski, 2008). It also has an autoimmune component since antibodies to insulin and islet cells are present at the time of diagnosis (p. 1187). Because type 1 diabetes needs to be managed very carefully, are [Delete] carbohydrate counting and a low fat diet [â€Å"are†] the best way [Plural] to make sure that glucose and insulin are available in the right propor tions. Pros and Cons of Gender Quotas Essay

There has been a considerable improvement of female representation in many areas of life in the past century: in â€Å"2012, women took home more than a third of the medals† awarded at the London Olympics, but more importantly, â€Å"the percentage of women on the boards of the 100 largest companies has risen over the past year to a record of 15. 6%. And in the last six months, 35% of new board appointments to FTSE 250 companies have been women† (Braund). Many countries, led by Norway, have promoted female representation by implementing gender quotas for corporate boards and they do so because gender quotas increase diversity in the workplace and with increased diversity comes many derivative benefits. Increased diversity by itself is a tremendous benefit; â€Å"it is in conformity with the notions of equality and representation† (Bilkisu). By increasing diversity on corporate boards, we can â€Å"give speedy increase in women’s representation [and] guarantee ‘equality of results’ for women and men aspirants† and, in doing so, support the concepts of freedom and liberty that this country was found upon (Bilkisu). Furthermore, not only do gender quotas promote democracy through increased diversity, they also help to defeat the tendencies of groups composed of similar individuals. Corporate boards with members that â€Å"have similar backgrounds and have been through similar socialization are more likely than not to share views and presumptions and [are] less likely to engage in vigorous discussion and to challenge management† (Gratton). Sharing views and presumptions and the reluctance to debate amongst one another results in groupthink, in which group members try to minimize conflict by reaching consensus and therefore create an atmosphere of decreased creativity, uniqueness, and independent thinking. This scenario often exists in all male or majority male corporate boards because â€Å"they tend towards ‘the risky shift’ which results in them colluding with each other [and] also lack the diverse networks that are so crucial to effective information search and decision making† (Gratton). Diversity promoted by gender quotas â€Å"can provide a wider range of opinion, experience and networking but also can help prevent groupthink that can hinder innovation† (Dong-youb). By introducing more women, businesses can reate an environment that stifles groupthink tendencies and allows for a larger variety of ideas and opinions to be shared. Introducing more women to corporate boards through gender quotas can help the business â€Å"better understand the needs of diverse customers and workers† and with the increasing globalization of the world’s economy, the customer base and work force for businesses are in fact becoming more diverse (Dong-youb). A better understanding of this increasingly diverse group of people allows the business to service their markets properly and enjoy continued profitability. Additionally, â€Å"women appear to be gradually taking control of the economy†¦ women control about 70 percent of household spending† and with women making more of the economic decisions, the need for more women on corporate boards becomes even more glaringly apparent (Bart). Especially â€Å"in the consumer sector [where] the products and services†¦ are mainly bought by women,† it is obvious that appointing more women to corporate boards would support the increasing number of female consumers by promoting their interests in business decisions (Gratton). Companies that choose to ignore this shift in society would be wasting the ample amount of talent that exists already, as well as passing up the â€Å"estimated economic benefits and boost to productivity of increasing female participation in the workforce†¦ at 11 percent of gross domestic product† (Coonan). â€Å"Diversity at the board-level also provides role models at the top of the corporate ladder that encourage aspiring younger employees with non-traditional qualifications or backgrounds† (Dong-youb). There have been an increasing number of women enrolling in higher education in proportion to men and an increase in the number of women on corporate boards would provide those young aspiring women with a role model. However, despite all the benefits that implementing gender quotas could have, there has not been as much change on the makeup of corporate boards as would be expected and there is a group of people that â€Å"are becoming frustrated by a lack of progress in this area and simply want quotas†¦ as a catalyst to disrupt the inertia and stimulate affirmative action† (Jury). Cons of Gender Quotas  While there are many people who see the benefits of gender quotas on corporate boards and strongly support the implementation of such, there are also people who view a gender quota as â€Å"wrong in principle, has difficulties in practice, is tokenistic and is counterproductive to the end goal† (Jury). Much of the view that gender quotas are not the solution to the lack of diversity on corporate boards can be contributed to the belief that â€Å"the fundamental criteria for a board appointment must be talent and appropriateness† and this belief is shared by both businesses and the women that businesses employ (Gratton). Everyone prefers to be chosen for certain positions based on merit as opposed to being picked for other reasons, since being chosen based on merit acknowledges strengths and dismisses any accusations of preferential treatment, especially when selection processes are transparent. Women facing minority representation on corporate boards are especially adamant that they â€Å"don’t want to go on a board as a token gesture[, they] want to be there because it’s meritorious† (McFarland). Women, just like men, want to be recognized for their skills and achievements and not their appearance or gender; â€Å"no woman wants to be a token female[,] yet the recent call for quotas of women in the boardroom runs the risk of achieving exactly that† (Mantzarapis). Implementing a gender quota for corporate boards can affect the dynamics of the workplace negatively by promoting the perception that women are only being appointed onto boards due to gender and not ability. These assumptions and questions concerning the reasons behind the promotion of women all contribute to â€Å"undermin[ing] her ability from the start and may make it more difficult for her to prove herself† (Mantzarapis). Even if the company openly claims that its decisions are based only on merit and not gender, the existence of gender quotas alone causes questions to be asked about the reasons behind a promotion or appointment no matter what the real reasons are. Since a quota system based on gender would undermine the merits of those females who would be appointed to corporate boards, those against gender quotas believe â€Å"it would be an insult to women and a great disservice to companies if women are appointed to fill quotas†¦ as standards will inevitably be compromised when an arbitrary numerical target is set against an unrealistic timeline† (Khoo).

However, there are many ways they can overcome those obstacles, such as receiving their education and having educational, family, health, and economical support. School/Education Staying in school and receiving their education is important so teenage mothers can remain resilient and graduate high school. In a study conducted, 69.7% of adolescents in the study were either enrolled, or graduated from high school. 78.7% of those adolescents received passing grades, and 76.7% of them saw finishing high school as essential (SIaDAPA). Most of the adolescents in this study saw the importance of staying in school and education, and they graduated. They know that eventually their hard work will pay off. After putting everyone in position, we acted out the small scene before the freeze, so that we could understand what was happening in the frame. The moment we decided to show was the beginning of the story telling, when Polly, Natasha and Carol are trying to get the boys interested in the story and take their minds off Jake. This part of the play is significant to the play, because it shows the audience the social status and relationships between the characters before there is any major change. Also our frame is just after a part which I felt was important; Shane had just overruled Russells idea to dangle Jake over the edge, and instead had asked to hear the story. This shows the audience that although Russell has the strong faà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ade, Shane has the final say. It also shows that Shane cares more than Russell and doesnt want to hurt Jake. I was Russell, so I had to show a still arrogant, but defeatist attitude because I have just been overruled in front of a group of a group of girls I was previously showing off too. At the time I am dangling Jake with one arm and looking back and trying to persuade Shane to change his mind. I did this by having a disappointed yet surprised facial expression, with wide eyes a slightly open, but down turning mouth. I showed defeat by slightly hunching over and looking to the floor. I was slightly more uncomfortable because I had just been humiliated, so I used my body language and turned my torso from full view of the group, yet at the same time Russell wouldnt have shown his discomfort to the group and he would have maintained quite high status so we used levels to show the status and Russell was centre stage on a table, dangling Jake over it, which showed that Russell had major influence and status over the other characters. We thought it best not to rehearse the thought aloud, because that is critical of the major idea, to look further into the character. When I had to improvise my thoughts aloud I decided to just focus on what is happening on stage, why, and how my character would feel. Russell had just been overruled by someone he has respect for and his fun has been spoiled, but because he is so arrogant and full of self-importance he wouldnt want the group to know that it bothers him. So I said Whatever, but its gonna take more than some crappy story to save his ass? The thoughts aloud and still-image conveyed the relationship issue within the play, to the audience. The particular part we chose showed the variety in status and the attitude that the characters have towards each other. All of these strategies were useful in helping us develop our understanding further and come up with material and techniques that we could use in our performance. Some were more effective than others and I personally felt that the hot-seating was the most useful because not only did it make the person in the seat think more and look deeper into the play, it made the questioners think about what they didnt quite know or understand and ask the question to find a possible solution. It also developed my improvisational skills, because I had to come up with an answer in character, with no real preparation time. A Clockwork Orange: Moral freedom is one of the most if not the most important of any freedoms available to humans EssayWe worked together experimenting with voice, movement, tone and expression until we were happy with the outcome. We firstly tried the use of broad east-end accent however the stamina and ability to keep it up fluctuated so we didnt use a particular accent. We spent time discussing and experimenting saying the same things, however with a different tone of voice and movement to show our characters personalities. This made us stop and think about how to express our characters. My line, And whats that? There look in the lake, dolphins splashing and playing together! Oh yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! was really annoying me because I couldnt say it effectively and it sounded either flat or over exaggerated. I tried shouting it but it sounded manic, and then I got the idea to actually go with it and really camp it up, after all I was telling a story and at that point my character was playing a character, so I made it sound deliberate and it worked. I also struggled to make, Look! Im going to wear it in my hair, sound effective because it sounded childish and out of context however I said it. So I decided to play around with the words and changed it to Wow! It looks so good in my hair, that way it worked well in context to the play, however I felt more confident saying it. It was important to use rehearsal time efficiently and plan things out, so that we could polish our performance and also develop our initial ideas. To improve our performance and connection to the characters we looked at some of Stanislavskis points on method acting and used them in a lesson to stay in role and think as we perceived our character would. I understood that reacting is a very important part of acting, so to incorporate reacting into my performance I reacted as if it was the first time that I had heard any of the lines, and to make this convincing, when an immediate reaction was needed I would start my line as the person before me was saying their last word. However this idea wasnt relevant to every line because sometimes a hesitant reaction was required. Although Sparkleshark is a contemporary piece, it was still written twelve years ago, so we decided to make it more relevant to today by using modern costume. Basically we decided that Russell and his gang should be dressed in tracksuit bottoms and Rockport shoes, to compare them to Chavs. They wore well regognised labels and styles that are associllers wife, we showed this by dressing her in orange make-up, designer makes etc. In the play Carol tries to be like Natasha, we dressed her in a similar short skirt to Natasha, however made her look less-presentable by making her slightly gothic. Polly and Jakes costumes deliberately contrasted those of the other group members. They were dressed in the average uniform; however Jakes geek-like personality is shown, with heavy rimmed glasses and perfect uniform. I was wearing; a white cotton open-neck blouse; black, polyester school jumper with embossed school logo; tailored black trousers; flat, black, leather sandals and I was carrying a plain, black satchel. My costume showed the audience that I was presentable however I wasnt rebellious. The costumes helped the audience to identify the characters and also made the play more relevant to now.
